Answer: Do you mean the tightening keys? They are either plastic or wooden triangles. When a stretched canvas gets loose on its stretchers, canvas can be made tight again by inserting the tightening keys into the corners of the stretcher bars (there is a little slit for them to slip into) and then tapping them in with a hammer until tension is restored to the stretched canvas.
